In a recent edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman discussed the potential for a future Apple virtual reality headset to become more compact and lightweight, with the ability to ship customized units from the factory to cater to individuals with visual impairments. Currently, Apple offers optional Zeiss-made lenses for glasses wearers in its retail stores, but this approach has supply management challenges and transforms electronic stores into healthcare providers.

The article also highlights the complexities of tying a product to a custom display, given that prescriptions can change over time and it could limit the ability to share or resell the headset.

However, Apple seems to have already considered these challenges. They have filed patents, as recent as August, indicating their interest in creating a VR or AR display that can be adjusted to correct an individual’s vision. This approach could prevent the company from adding additional barriers to accessing a potentially expensive product. It may also benefit customers who may not be aware of their vision issues when purchasing a new VR headset.
