The upcoming second season of “Peacemaker” is now officially a part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe.
In a recent announcement on Threads, Gunn confirmed that “Peacemaker” Season 2 will be integrated into the new DCU and will address the major reset that DC Studios’ flagship cinematic universe is currently undergoing.
Gunn had previously stated that no productions from the old DC Extended Universe would be considered canon in the new DCU. However, certain DCEU actors, such as John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, will continue to play their roles in the rebooted universe. This unique situation arises as the DCEU-to-DCU reboot occurs between the release of Seasons 1 and 2 of “Peacemaker.”
The journey to “Peacemaker” Season 2 began with its creation, writing, and co-direction by Gunn. The series premiered on Max (formerly HBO Max) in January 2022, serving as a direct continuation of Gunn’s 2021 DCEU film, “The Suicide Squad.” Season 1 concluded in February 2022, and Max promptly ordered another season.
In 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery appointed Gunn and Safran as co-chairs and CEOs of the restructured DC Studios. They initiated plans for their rebooted DCU, commencing with the animated series “Creature Commandos” and the live-action feature film “Superman: Legacy.” Additionally, they announced “Waller,” a live-action Max series in which Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller from “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker.”
Although Gunn confirmed in February 2023 that “Peacemaker” Season 2 was in development, it is expected to premiere after the release of “Superman: Legacy” and “Waller,” with the former hitting theaters in July 2025. Gunn has recently confirmed that he has commenced writing for “Peacemaker” Season 2.
While “Peacemaker” Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Max, Season 2 does not yet have a confirmed premiere date.
