Sony has provided a reassuring update for gamers concerned about storage capacity by officially confirming that the PS5 Slim console will maintain its expandable storage capabilities. This means that players will continue to have the option to add extra storage to their consoles as needed.
A spokesperson from PlayStation communicated to IGN via email that there will be no alterations with the new PS5 Slim model in terms of expandable storage. Gamers will still be able to follow the existing process of removing the back cover panel of the console and manually installing an additional SSD.
Additionally, the PS5 Slim will feature more internal memory compared to the launch version, with a generous 1TB of internal SSD storage, as opposed to the 825GB in the original model, of which only 667GB was usable. The continued support for expandable storage is likely to be a significant advantage for prospective buyers of the redesign.
Given that many blockbuster games released for Sony’s ninth-generation home console come with substantial file sizes, the option to augment the storage with an M.2 SSD is a valuable feature. Notably, a recent software update enabled support for up to 8TB of additional SSD storage.
It’s worth noting that, similar to the launch model, not just any M.2 SSD can be used with the PS5 Slim. Sony has specified that the M.2 SSD must be PCIe Gen4, with minimum read speeds of 5,500MB/s, although some users have found that M.2 SSDs with slower read speeds are also compatible with the console.
The PS5 Slim is set to be released next month. For further insights, you can explore comparisons between the PS5 Slim and the launch model, as well as the Xbox Series consoles. If you’re planning to purchase a PS5 in the near future, be sure to check out the best PS5 SSD deals.
